Summer Strategic Planning Senior Analyst Intern - Master's Program

Program Structure

As a Summer Senior Analyst, you are given all the opportunities and responsibilities of a full-time employee in our Strategic Planning group -- supporting us and our executive management team in managing the company's strategy. The summer months of the annual planning process include several key activities such as kicking off Murphy USA's Annual Financial Plan process, articulating corporate goals for the following year, and partnering with departments to formulate department-specific objectives and initiatives. As a Summer Senior Analyst, you will be playing a critical role in contributing to these activities - ranging from conducting research on fuel and convenience-store industry dynamics to working side-by-side with departments in reviewing performance history and proposing financial and operational targets.

In addition to supporting these annual planning activities and events, you will also have the opportunity to lead a unique project. This project will reflect your contribution to the Strategic Planning group as a valued member of the team. At the end of your internship, you will present this project as part of your evaluation.

The Summer Senior Analyst program is your opportunity to demonstrate your desire and ability to build a long-term career with us. Based on your performance and fit with our company throughout the 8-10 weeks of the program, there will be a potential opportunity to join Murphy USA as a full-time member of the Strategic Planning group the following year.

Who We Seek

Our Summer Senior Analyst Program is aimed at full-time MBA students and is usually undertaken during the summer prior to the second year of study. Candidates typically have 2-3 years of prior work experience, aspire to start or continue a career in retail, and have a passion to solve analytical problems and strategic challenges in a corporate environment. While we do not require or look for a specific MBA discipline or major, we expect candidates to have knowledge of the retail industry and the products and customer experience that Murphy USA offers.

At this time, we are only recruiting MBA candidates who are eligible to work in the United States (without need of employer sponsorship).

Learning and Development

Throughout the program, you will develop a broad base of business knowledge covering Strategy, Marketing, Operations and Finance. There will also be an opportunity to "dive deep" into a specific business topic through a project that you will lead throughout the summer.
As a Summer Senior Analysts you will take part in a program orientation where you will learn about our company's strategic direction, our principles and culture, and the benefits and responsibilities of being an employee of Murphy USA. You will also receive training throughout the summer that is designed to help you succeed in your role.

Networking will also be an important part of the summer program experience. To help you meet others across the organization and learn more about our company, we organize a cross-department series of presentations, including trips "out to the Field" - providing you an insider's look at our retail sites. Throughout the summer, you will also attend various social events which will help you to develop a lasting professional network.

Integral to your learning and development will be our performance management process. You will receive structured performance feedback at both the mid-point and conclusion of the program - ensuring that you get a solid understanding of your areas of strength and development as a member of Murphy USA.

We hire at a select number of MBA programs in the Southwest and receive numerous applications each year.

The interview process is designed to assess your analytical and communication abilities, as well as your overall fit with our culture. Typically you can expect to attend two rounds of interviews - one on campus and another at our corporate headquarters in El Dorado, Arkansas. Both interview rounds will include a business case that tests your analytical competencies and understanding of retail challenges.
